JAKARTA (ANTARA) – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) reaffirmed its respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty in a joint statement at the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Jakarta on Friday.
„(Regarding Ukraine), we reaffirmed our respect for (Ukraine’s) sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity,” the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ statement said.
UN ASEAN reiterated its call for compliance with the Charter and international law and underlined the importance of an immediate cessation of hostilities and active engagement in genuine dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
ASEAN member states also supported UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ efforts for a peaceful solution.
ASEAN also called for rapid, safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid for those in need in Ukraine, as well as for the safety of civilians, humanitarian workers and persons in vulnerable situations.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi confirmed that Indonesia is pushing for deepening cooperation on food security between ASEAN and Russia.
Indonesia calls for firmer cooperation to „save the world” amid Russo-Ukrainian war.
„As a friend of Russia and Ukraine, Indonesia will never stop calling for peace. Our partnership must realize this precedent (of peace) in real actions,” Marsudi said.
ASEAN is proposing an ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Crisis at this September’s ASEAN Summit.
