VIGO, Spain, June 4 (Reuters) – Real Valladolid were kicked out of La Liga on the final day of the season on Sunday, while champions Barcelona ended their campaign with a struggling 2-1 defeat at Celta Vigo.
Six eager teams went into the final weekend hoping to avoid the drop, when Ronaldo-owned Valladolid’s 0-0 draw at home to Getafe ensured they finished 18th and ended their season-long LaLiga gold.
At Balaidos in Vigo, he took the lead in the 42nd minute, beating Gabriel Veiga, Marcos Alonso and Andreas Christensen.
Fueled by their desire to rubber-stamp their defence, Celta began a flurry of attacks on Barca’s backline and took control of the game, before Vega scored again in the 65th minute with an unexpected cross into the net.
Barca made substitutions in the second half and one of those substitutions was Ansu Fati who scored in the 79th minute, but Celta held on for the win and finished 13th.
Valencia and Cádiz survived after a 1-1 draw, while Almeria trailed already-relegated Espanyol twice, thanks to Adrien Mbarba’s 87th-minute penalty to earn a 3-3 draw to move up to 41 points – one ahead of Valladolid.
