A statement released by his family said: „Alain Fabian, Anouchka, Anthony and (his dog) Lupo are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father.
„He passed away peacefully at his home in Douchi surrounded by his three children and his family.”
Le Parisian newspaper called Delon „a legend of cinema”, while Liberation described him as „a leading figure of cinema, a symbol of shadowy masculinity, an actor of insane charisma”.
In a statement to AFP, Brigitte Bardot said Delon „represented the best of French 'prestige cinema'”.
„A messenger of grace, talent, beauty. I miss a friend, an alter ego, a partner.”
Delon’s last public appearance was receiving the honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019.
At the event, he gave an emotional farewell speech to cinema.
„It’s a posthumous tribute, but from my lifetime,” he said. „I’m going to leave, but I won’t leave without thanking you.”
Gilles Jacob, former president of the Cannes festival, described Delon as a „lion…an actor with a steely gaze”, while Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera called him an „icon”. Olympus of the Immortals”.
