„Sweet Planet,” one of the highest-grossing Sino-European co-productions in recent years, will air on China Global Television Network starting Friday.
The six-part cooking documentary is a co-production between global millennial-focused channel operator Inside TV, Netherlands-based production company JOIIN and CGTN. It explores the culinary and cultural impact of sugar on cooking and food rituals around the world. In each episode, viewers are introduced to not only the delectable creations, but also the stories of the local chefs, farmers and artisans behind the sticky delicacies.
Production went to Reykjanes, Iceland for salt, Xinjiang, China for grape growing, the Netherlands for mead production, the sweet shops of Copenhagen, maple sugar shacks in Canada, taro paste production in Fuzhou, and Ushuaia, Argentina, for its sweet desserts.
„Sweet Planet” is available on CGTN's six channels, in 68 languages, with 700 million viewers worldwide. It is also available on CGTN Digital, accessible on CGTN.com, CGTN mobile apps, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Weibo and other social media platforms with over 600 million followers worldwide.
Insight TV's global channels reach 400+ million households in 56 countries in 12 languages. It is also available for licensing to additional channels and platforms.
The series was launched at an event in The Hague attended by Inside TV CEO Ryan Bester and Director of Programming, CGTN Europe, Qian Fang.
„We believe this co-production will be well received in China and on CGTN's international feeds, as well as Insight TV channels around the world, marking the start of an ongoing series format,” Bester said.
JOIIN, which includes content production and distribution, a global creator network and IP monetization, has a creative center in Amsterdam and BD and an operations center in Beijing. These cater to customers in the Eurasian region with a special focus on Greater China and Southeast Asia.
