Scottish Open Snooker 2023: Judd Trump hits 53rd century of season to whitewash Sydney Wilson, Mark Allen loses

Jude Trump advanced to the second round of the Scottish Open with a 47-minute win over Sydney Wilson in his Edinburgh opener.

As the world No. 2 hit his 53rd century of the season on 33 without reply, Wilson – absent on tour – was looking outside his comfort zone to rival Trump’s brilliance.

After some poor positioning from Wilson early on, Trump played well, taking a break on 79 to get the ball rolling and cement the opening frame.

He continued his good start in the second frame and scored a top score of 147 runs.

However, Trump chose pink with his knock, finishing with 142 to move halfway to victory.

The third frame saw more beautiful snooker from Trump as Wilson couldn’t shake the nerves, missing the third easy pot as the match began to slip away from him.

Trump tapped out in a sensational brown on his way to round one of the second, ending the third frame in under 33 minutes.

More boos from the underdogs came with another miss to right-center as the pair showed what felt like a dead rubber in the fourth frame.

Trump sank the red in the same pocket before breaking the pack, but handed control to Wilson when the 2019 world champion picked a poor pot in the middle while chasing a century.

But Wilson couldn’t take advantage, as he missed a typical black, and Trump was out.

Mark Allen’s shock exit was followed by a 4–2 defeat to Jamie Jones.

Shoot-out winner Allen eased his way into the first frame thanks to a break of 61, but struggled to find his free flow after that.

Jones, who hasn’t made it past the second round of a tournament this season, tied the score with a 59 to 72 despite failing to post a break of 50+.

However, he soon made amends to take a 2-1 lead in the third frame with a stunning total clearance of 141.

The fourth was somewhat bitter, with Allen having to make several visits to seal the table, honorably ending one of his breaks by calling a foul against himself for brushing the red with his hand.

Jones rediscovered the form he had found in the third frame by knocking in a century and headed to within a frame of victory.

Another century from Jones – this time of 103 – was enough to see him through as he booked his place in the second round.

He will face Welshman Dominic Dale in the third round.
