TORONTO, Sept 9 (Reuters) – U.S. rapper and songwriter Lil Nas X believes he is the „real me” behind the scenes with his new documentary, the musician told reporters at the 43rd Toronto Film Festival on Saturday night. .
Nas X, whose real name was Montero Lamar Hill, was the first openly gay man to win a Country Music Association award for his song „Old Town Road.”
„Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero,” a biographical documentary directed by Carlos López Estrada and Jack Manuel, follows the star on tour and captures his relationship with his fans. It brings together Nas’ journey to own his identity as a black queer artist along the way.
„I want my fans to see the real me — I’m always joking around and joking around 24/7, so they can take what they want with this film,” Nas told reporters on the red carpet. He said the film is the end of an era in his life and the beginning of a new one.
„This movie is so immediate to the mood I’m in… a little confusing.” Nas said.
Estrada told Reuters the film is built around the idea of transformation, where Nas and his fans represent owning one’s identity and becoming the person one is meant to be.
„Nas’ fans embraced his message about becoming the person you want to be, acknowledging all the parts of yourself that you love and fear,” Estrada said.
