Alfonso X (1221-84) ruled the crown of Castile from 1252 until his death. Known as „the genius”, he oversaw the production of a large volume of literature in his scriptorium. One of the most impressive of these literary publications is the collection of hymns known as the Canticas de Santa Maria, which consists of 429 hymns preserved in four manuscripts. Miracle songs (or canticas de mirage) form the center of this book. Although canticas have been the subject of much scholarly attention, only a few studies have looked at the repertory through an interdisciplinary lens. Fewer have yet explored how the canticas harnessed the power of song as a communicative medium that functioned as a social tool in the intellectual environment of Alphonse’s court. This book offers a new perspective on the song collection, examining how canticas used their music and text along with rhetorical devices to communicate with their intended audience.
Author Henry D. Drummond builds on earlier methodologies and evaluates a wide range of songs, adopting a novel and holistic assessment of the songs’ melodic, poetic aspects, and narrative logic. Embracing medieval rhetoric, rhyme-based drama, and song’s inherent comedic potential, he presents a nuanced understanding of a song form that effectively communicates its stories to listeners through a variety of devices. Such devices, Drummond argues, allow canticas to morph into larger propaganda pieces, designed to dignify Alfonso X through an elaborate court ritual.
