Keegan Bradley was the last golfer in the BMW Championship last week, but he took full advantage of the opportunity by winning the tournament and securing his place in the 2024 Tour Championship field this week. With the top 30 golfers in the rankings playing for the title at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Bradley moved from No. 50 to No. 4 in the rankings. However, each golfer is assigned a starting stroke based on their place in the standings, with world No. 1 Scotty Scheffler leading the way at -10. Scheffler is two strokes ahead of Xander Schauffele (-8), three ahead of Hideki Matsuyama (-7) and four ahead of Bradley (-6).
The latest 2024 Tour Championship odds list Schaeffler as a +100 favorite ($100 risk to win), Schaeffel at +220 and Matsuyama at +1200. Scheffler has already won six PGA Tour events this season, but he is still seeking his first career Tour Championship win. The best 2024 Tour Championship golf predictions
One surprise: McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the top +1800 favorites, didn’t crack the top five this week. McIlroy won the Tour Championship in 2016, 2019 and 2022, entering the tournament with odds between 6-1 and 8-1 all three years. He has just one win in an individual event this season, which came three months ago at the Wells Fargo Championship.
McIlroy has struggled to post consistent results after missing a pair of close putts in the stretch run of the US Open and finishing outside the top 10 in three of his last four events. He missed the cut at the Open Championship and finished T68 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship to open the playoffs. The model doesn’t expect McIlroy to compete for the title this weekend, suggesting bettors should look elsewhere on the PGA odds board for value.
The model also examines where Schaeffel ends up. Schaffel’s career best results came before this season, when she won the 2017 Tour Championship and the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The 30-year-old finally broke through at the major championships this season, winning the PGA Championship and the Open Championship this summer.
Brooks became the first golfer since Koepka in 2018 to win multiple majors in the same year and will now aim for the second Tour Championship victory of his career. Schauffele is second in the FedEx Cup standings, so he will start the tournament two strokes behind Schaeffler. With five top-five finishes at the Tour Championship in the past six years, Schaffel should be considered for Tour Championship races.
