Hideki Matsuyama managed to stave off a crowded leaderboard in Memphis last weekend to open the FedEx Cup playoffs, which continue this week with the 2024 BMW Championship. Matsuyama was a 30-1 longshot last week, but his price has been cut to 18-1 in the 2024 BMW Championship odds. He still sits behind world No. 1 Scotty Scheffler, who is a +320 favorite on the PGA odds panel. Other BMW Championship contenders include Xander Schauffele (+650), Rory McIlroy (+1000) and Collin Morikawa (+1200).

Best 2024 BMW Championship Golf Predictions
One surprise: McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the favorites, didn’t crack the top five this week. McIlroy is coming off a tough week in Memphis, finishing with rounds of 73, 74 and 74 over the final three days. He finished second-to-last overall among golfers in wins over the weekend, and it was statistically the second-worst week of his career.
McIlroy had his third-worst week in strokes gained, so he’s not in good shape heading into the second event of the playoffs. He has gone more than a decade since his last major win, winning three of his last four runs at the US Open earlier this season. McIlroy fell well short of a medal at the Olympics, so Modell can’t count on him to meet expectations this week.
The model also examines where Schaeffel ends up. Schaffel nearly completed one of the greatest comebacks in PGA Tour history at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, entering the clubhouse Sunday nine shots behind the leader with a share of the lead. Hideki Matsuyama came up with some winning shots on the last few holes, but Schaeffel kept up the pace he’s played all season.
The world No. 2 won his first major at the PGA Championship in May before adding victory at the Open Championship last month. He has recorded 13 top 10 finishes in the 19 matches he has played.
